E-bikes and E-scooters are becoming increasingly popular, they will certainly be on the Christmas wish list for some of our younger tenants this year.
But are you aware of the risks of these products?
Most are powered by lithium-ion batteries which can be charged in the home. It is important that you charge them safely to avoid a risk of a fire starting and putting your families and homes at risk.
These are still relatively new on the market therefore there is limited data relating to fires. But London Fire Brigade reported 59 fires caused by e-bikes and e-scooters in 2021. In September 2022 a man died and eight people were hospitalized after a fire caused by an electric bike in Bristol.
On occasions batteries can fail catastrophically, they can “explode” and lead to a rapidly developing fire.
These e-bikes and e-scooters can have fatal consequences.
Fires Safety Advice for tenants
- Follow the manufactures instructions
- Charge batteries when you are awake. Do not leave batteries to charge when your asleep
- Always use the manufactures approved charger. If you spot any problems or damage buy an official replacement charger from a reputable retailer
- In many e-bikes and e-scooter fires the use of substandard or counterfeit goods, items that do not meet British or European Standards – Buy genuine approved items, this could save your life
- Do not store or charge e-bikes or e-scooter on escape routes or in communal areas
- Do not store or charge your e-bike or e-scooter near combustible or flammable materials
- If you need to dispose of a damaged battery, do not dispose of it in your household waste or normal recycling. Check with the local authority to see what the battery recycling arrangements are for your area.
